Advanced Project Management Certificate from Stanford (SCPM)

This post is for documenting my experience of Advanced Project Management Certificate from Stanford University. Stanford Certified Project Manager (SCPM) is a program designed by "The Stanford Center for Professional Development", Stanford University. Many of the folks after finishing their Project Management Professional (PMP) certification (offered by Project Management Institute) keep asking the question, What's next? I found my answer to that in SCPM. Taking this course provides me two immediate advantages
  1. Getting a advanced project management certificate from the reputed Stanford University, which is recognized across the globe and needs no introduction in terms of its quality of education and backed by Professors, who are industry experienced and gurus in their respective fields.
  2. Earning the Professional Development Units (PDUs) for maintaining my PMP certification. In order to adhere to PMP's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program, one needs to earn 60 PDUs in order to remain PMP certified.
For getting SCPM, one needs to finish 6 courses, 3 Required Courses & 3 Elective Courses. Completion of each course earns us 20 PDUs. So if one successfully completes SCPM, would earn total 120 PDUs. This course is recognized by PMI and is one of the ways to earn PDUs.

Let me explain the roadmap to getting Stanford Certified Project Manager (SCPM) certification.

1. Log on to http://scpd.stanford.edu/

2. Next step is a requirement to complete and submit your application form, which would then be processed and accepted. The intent of the process is to verify the prerequisite 3 years of Project Management experience. Its mentioned that it normally takes 3 - 7 working days to process and accept your form. I noticed that possibly if you are PMP certified then you have an edge and application gets processed faster. In my case, I got the approval within one working day.

3. You can finish the 3 required and 3 elective courses in any order but its highly recommeneded to finish "Converting Strategy into Action" & "Leadership for Strategic Execution" first.

4. The courses offered are Required Courses

and Elective Courses

5. So among the list above, one needs to finish all 3 required courses and any of the 3 elective courses

6. One can do the course either by opting in campus or online. I opted for online. Each course online costs $950 and i planned on doing one course at a time.

7. Once fees is paid, you will be given access to online videos, materials. In order to finish the course one needs to pass a final exam. Pass percentage is 85% and the questions are designed such that one needs to go through the entire material and videos to be able to answer. This is a way to make sure that people are actually going through the course. One is allowed to print and keep the question paper while going the course and keep the answers as they finish. They can then submit the exam online. Last step to formally
complete the course is to submit the Evaluation Form.

8. Your records will be updated in 3 - 7 working days and your certificate for the completed course and also with details on how to gain PDUs in PMI are mailed in 3 - 4 weeks.

9. You can also mail them requesting status update and they are very forthcoming in responding fast and favorably.

10. I finished the 3 required courses and 3 elective courses Project Risk Management, Leading Effective Teams & Financial Mastery for ProjectsI

In addition to what I mentioned above, below is an abstract from the mail that I received from "scpd-customerservice@stanford.edu"

1. Your mystanfordconnection profile will be updated within 10-15 business days; the course will move from the "enrolled" section to the "completed" section on the "my course records" page. A "P" grade reflects that you have passed the course.

2. A course completion certificate containing the Stanford seal and the relevant PMI ID number (to claim PDUs) will be generated and sent to the preferred address listed in your mystanfordconnection profile within 2-3 weeks.

3. If you elected and paid for the CEU/Letter Grade/Transcript this document will be processed by the Continuing Studies department within 3-4 weeks. Please note that according to federal guidelines, official transcripts must be sent to a home address. If your profile does not include a home address, your transcript will not be sent.

4. If this is your sixth and final course in the program, you are eligible to receive your Stanford Certified Project Manager Credential. Upon verification that you have successfully completed the curriculum requirements, your final credential will be sent to the preferred address listed in your mystanfordconnection on file. Please allow 2-3 weeks for receipt.

-->
5. In order to protect the integrity of the certificates and transcripts, no electronic form of course completion verification is available. If you require immediate proof of your course completion, a printout of your test score notification page is the best alternative. To answer the question regarding exams. You can take the exam for any of the classes as many times as needed to pass with 85% or better. We do not however give out the correct or incorrect answers to exam questions.

And for all those interested please find below the scanned copy of SCPM certification

  3. Hey Sridhar,

Good to see that you have compiled all the information in a single post.

Unfortunately I could not trace your post in my earlier search regarding SCPM and I had to take the long route of reading complete information from Stanford site and it needed a phone call for clarifications.

One more point you can add in your next post/update would be about current/ex student community where new students can get assistance for resources, hints, etc. Ex: SAPM group in www.linkedin.com- Srinath

  4. Hi Sridhar

How much time it took for you to finish all the 6 courses. I finished my PMP last year and presently working towards my CISA exam in June. SCPM seems to be interesting. When did you start and when did u finish ?

Thanks for stopping by. Honestly I have not done too much digging into any groups but the group that you mentioned, I did join the group.
I can try answering any questions if you have.

  6. Srini

I was able to finish all 6 courses in 15 days time. It requires some effort since each course approximately takes anywhere between 15 - 20 hours. For me time to finish was a constraint and pushed myself to complete. But the best part is that Videos are accessible for 90 days after you register and accessible even after you pass the exam. So in case you want to refer back to them, you can do that. I can say one thing for sure and that is the course is worth every cent. Stanford does not really need an endorsement from me but the Professors are industry experts and consultants to some of the industry leaders (CEOs, COOs, Managers) so you actually learn from the Gurus.
Let me know if you have further questions and I will be happy to answer them for you

  9. Hi Sridhar

16 days you finished entire course, Unbeleivable, I m sure you must have put lot of effort into that. How r the module exams like, r they easy or really tough. I have in my mind to join this, but i have some other commitments as of now. Last year i finished my MBA and PMP. But i think you will be an inspiration for me to go ahead and do this course in the near future.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Srini

I will feel happy to help in any way. To answer your questions, well it definitely requires a commitment to finish all 6 courses in a short period but if you already are into Project/Program Management and handle likewise responsibilities and perform roles, then it is so much easier for you to relate, understand & digest things faster. This is the best part about professional courses since you do them while having practical and real time experience and easier to go through them.
Now regarding the quality of questions. Well there would be 60 questions and you need to get 85% above to pass. Questions are designed such that you need to go through the entire materials and videos to be able to answer. Its not like you can skip any thing and still able to answer. This is not possible since questions are very specific to certain points discussed in the class. They may be passing comments or something for which you would need to understand the underlying meanings. Bottom line is that you need to be all ears for what is being discussed and told in the class to be able to find answers. Some questions are definitely straight forward, the answers of which you can find it in material provided but they alone will not be sufficient to get 85% +. So as I had mentioned in the blog posting above that its recommended that you keep the print out of the questions and answer them as you go along the course. Remember you will never be told the right answer so even if you attempt giving the exams n number of times, you still would need to get them right.
Let me know if you have further questions and wishing you all the best for your future endeavors.

  16. Thank you for stopping by Alison. My experience of doing SCPM tells me that doing PMP certification first makes more sense. SCPM is supposedly advanced project management course that would compliment and build over the knowledge you have gained after finishing PMP. Please note that having PMP is not a must to do SCPM but it definitely helps. Putting it in another way, there is not much covered in SCPM that would help you in your PMP certification. Thanks for all the valuable info. I'm a PMP and interested in doing SCPM.I've few questions. I know the online version of the course is around $900/subjecte.Does it include exam cost also? Can we take ( retake) exams without paying any exam fee?

Also how tough ( or easy ) to clear these exams, especially compare to PMP?

  19. Hello Sridhar,

Your blog is helpful with good information about the Stanford Certification.

I have a MBA and 3 years of PM experience. But, I do not have the 35 hours project management education requirement to be eligible for the PMP exam.
I was planning on enrolling at Stanford to meet the education requirement.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nabitha

If the intent is to just get 35 hours project management education requirement to be eligible for the PMP exam then probably taking Stanford might not be the right way. First it would be expensive and secondly it will not help you for PMP exam. SCPM is better to do after you finish PMP and would like to take your knowledge in Project Management to the next level.

I had enrolled for pmpcampus which was like 195$ and got my 35 contact hours. Bonus part is that they included 1320 questions that helped me prepare for the exam. I have shared the same in my previous blog http://sridharpeddisetty.blogspot.com/2008/05/lessons-learned-journey-to-project_03.html

Let me know if you have further questions and good luck

  21. Hi Sridhar

I have MS degree in computers and 9+ year of IT experience. Recently I applied for SCPM course and it got approved.

I do not have the PMI certification.

    1. Do you think I would need PMI certification after SCPM to be affective?

    2. Do employers ask for PMI, even if I SCPM credentials.

Please share your views on this.

    Thanks
    Anuj

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anuj

You need not be a PMP to go for SCPM. Its just that being a PMP would help you understand certain topics better, which are being covered while doing SCPM courses.

And regarding your question whether "Do employers ask for PMI, even if I SCPM credentials". Well PMI certification definitely has more weightage and universal acceptance than SCPM. SCPM is more like covering advanced topics in Project Management taking to next levels of Program and Portfolio management. Hope this helps and good luck with your SCPM. Let me know if you have further questions

  23. Sridhar,

I was wondering if you could advice on the PM profession - I have a masters in Computer Science and have been in the technical field for over 10 years. Since the last couple of years I have been involved in customer escalation for high touch customers. And the PM profession seems a logical progression to my technical career. Considering I am still on H1 and waiting for GC, would you comment on the impression (that I got from a few people) that PM's can be done without in a tough macroeconomic condition. Could you also comment on the progression of a technical to a PM career, where do I start etc?

    Really appreciate your input.

    Thanks,
    Karthik

  24. Karthik

I appreciate you asking me for my inputs. Its difficult for me to assess your current situation and the need to make a change. Are you planning to make the move into Project Management because you think thats the next logical step for your growth or you consider PM to be more lucrative or more secured? I have seen that you can be in better bargaining position if you can be techno-managerial in the sense that you bring to table both your technical and managerial experience.
Having said that, it looks like you already in a way are involved in one or more aspects of management. If you would like to understand all other aspects of Project Management then you can try getting familiar with PMI methodologies and processes. There is always an open debate going on whether certifications add any value. Having said that my personal experience has been doing PMP helps one understand standardized practices, tools & techniques to apply PM. After which how one implements those is based upon needs. Then you can expand your knowledge to learn how PM can be applied to various agile methodologies including scrum, XP and lean. Dynamics of PM keep changing and challenge is to adapt to the needs. I understand that I might have left some questions unanswered. Let me know if I can help answering those in my next posts.

Let me see if I can help with you some answers (Inline)

    Question:
Do you suggest any sequence for these courses? like by doing Converting Strategy into Action first will help when you prepare for leverging the customer relationship.

Response: One needs to finish 3 required courses and 3 elective courses. There is no hard and fast rule of what sequence to follow. But one needs to finish the 3 required courses before opting for elective.
Having said that, its recommended to follow sequence in order to help relate with what is being taught in an order. I have shared the order that I followed in the post above and it definitely made sense for me.

    Question:
What kind of course material is available for dowonload? is that the same like online course.

    Response:
Course material is extensive enough for the topics that are covered. In couple of courses, books will be mailed to you. Some of the books are technological best sellers and worth.

    Question:
When can we give exam and how it is conducted?

    Response:
You can give exam whenever you are ready and done with the course. As I had indicated in my post that one can print out the question and answer them as they go along the course

    Question:
Do we have any forum where our course related queries are answered or discussed?

    Response:
Yes the course also give an option of posting your queries to a forum

Kindly share your experience in regards to the course content, the complexity of the material and the difficulty level of the exam.

  34. Uzma,
Congratulations for your application being accepted. Do not worry about the things as you will do just fine. As I had shared in my post, it makes sense to do one course at a time financial wise and also logically. I am sure you are undertaking this course to help you contribute more in your current or future Organization and in actuality improving your stakes. So here is thing. Each of the course is all about practically how to align what is covered, so you will not feel burdened of taking in too much theory and fear of need to memorize all . Its more like you need to digest stuff. And this is not like you study material and then go and give exam. Its 'open' book concept. You take the print out of the question and keep it with you and while going over the course, you will be able to get answers of the questions. Some would be straight forward and no brainier and some where you would need to pay more attention. All in all, this exercise is good because this way you can pay more attention to what is being taught and also in material.
You also would have situations where some of the questions, you could not get answers when taking video sessions, so you can always revisit the videos n # of times and Material is yours to keep.
Let me know if you have further questions Uzma and I assure you that you will do great. Secret of getting ahead and is getting started and you have already taken the starting step towards your goal. All the best

  35. Hi Sridhar,

I am PMP certified and I read that you can earn 120 PDU during conducting the SCPM Program. My receritifcation cycle for ends in 2012 and I am intending to graduate from SCPM in April 2010. Question:
1.) Can I apply all 120 PDUs at one time for PMI CCR (so that the new validity CCR prolongs until 2018)?
2.) Or is it only possible to apply 60PDU (so that new CCR date becomes 2015)? (if this is the case, can I apply the remaining 60PDUs at a later recertification cycle)?

    Thx for you help!
    -mike

    ReplyDelete
  36. Mike,

Unfortunately it does not work like that for PMI.
If you go through http://www.pmi.org/CareerDevelopment/Pages/MaintainYourCredential.aspx, there in 4th point its mentioned that
If you are a PMP or PgMP credential holder, you can transfer up to 20 PDUs earned in the last year of your current cycle.

In other words, this in case If you accrued more than 60 PDUs for your CCR, you can transfer up to 20 PDUs to your next three-year cycle.

So I believe that PDUs which you earn during current cycle (for you expiring in 2012), then among the 120 PDUs gained, you will actually be able to transfer only 20 of them to the cycle ending 2015 and still need to earn 40 more.

I have applied my 120 PDUs and since I earned it last year, (my re certification is due 2011) and I could apply ONLY 60 of those PDUs and rest 60 PDUs are non-transferable to next Cycle. Let me know if you hear anything contrary to what I understood. I tried asking the same question to PMI folks and they copy-pasted what they have in their website.
I am sorry to disappoint you but I guess thats how PMI wants to ensure that people keep the credential of PMP by actually doing PDUs in current cycle and not do at once in one cycle and apply for the future cycles.

I just got accepted and very excited. I have same concern about how many courses should I take at first time. Any recommendation ? I have no problem paying altogether but I may not find so much time to study due to full time work as a Consultant.

Thanks man... and you are doing a great favor to us all..

    Appreciate it..

  38. Mike,

Congratulations for getting through the application process and thank you for asking my inputs.
Regarding the question on how many courses to take at a time, well its more logical than financial in my view. One course at a time would help you concentrate on one subject and would give you the pace without feeling the pressure of enrolling for all at once and trying to juggle between them. Its highly recommended that we do one at a time and also follow a logical order of courses so that you can easily relate with the topics being covered in a kind of 'sequential' order especially for the mandatory ones.
Let me know if I can help answering further questions.
Thank you for your kind words. I am trying to do my bit for what I got from others. All the best Mike and I am sure you will appreciate what you learn.

Have you considered going to the campus vs. doing it online difference? I mean, does it make any difference? I know there is about $300 difference, but I saw that there is a group discount option for a group of five enrolling together. I am not sure what the discount would be, but just wondering if you have considered that and then opted for online course.

Honestly I never considered doing the course in campus because of time and location constraints. What mainly motivated me to go for SCPM, was its flexibility of doing it at your own pace and also convenience of going through the courses online, anytime & anywhere. On top of it, I can go through the sessions n number of times and concentrate on topic(s) that interest me the most.
Having said that, I do agree that taking the course @ campus is definitely having its plus points. Sessions are interactive and also you can develop networking with like minded professionals.

  43. Hello Sridhar!

    First of all,
Thank you so much for all the valuable information.
I have the following questions for you:
1-Since I live abroad, do I need to be a resident in the US to register?

2-Do I fulfill the prerequisite of 3 years Project Management experience?
(I have an MIS bachelor degree from a state university in the US.
I am also the CEO of my company since 5 years (database development and SAAS.)

3- Do they ask for any proof of experience?
4-Are we supposed to pay all the fees before getting accepted?
5-Can I register for the Advanced Computer Security Certificate at the same time?
Or do I need to complete SCPM before?
6-Can we get certified at Stanford in different programs?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thank you Stephanie for stopping by and I am happy that you found what I shared, valuable. Let me see if I can answer your questions

1-Since I live abroad, do I need to be a resident in the US to register?
I do not think so. I think that's the purpose of doing this course online, which is to eliminate geographical limitations. They mention in their FAQs (http://apm.stanford.edu/faq.htm), "Online courses are available anytime, from any Internet connection." So you do not need to be US resident in my opinion.

2-Do I fulfill the prerequisite of 3 years Project Management experience?
I think that's the prerequisite, which says
Applicants need a bachelor's degree,a minimum of three to five years of experience managing projects, and may need to complete
the Project Management Mastery course online to satisfy admission
    requirements.
Since I am PMP, I was not asked any further details.

(I have an MIS bachelor degree from a state university in the US.
I am also the CEO of my company since 5 years (database development and SAAS.)

I personally feel that you being CEO, do have experience more or less relevant to what they are looking for. You can contact them over eMail or phone and usually they are very prompt in answering.

3- Do they ask for any proof of experience?
They actually did not ask for any proof of experience but I do remember documenting all relevant information in application including my PMP details.

4-Are we supposed to pay all the fees before getting accepted?
No. You can pay for each course one at a time.

5-Can I register for the Advanced Computer Security Certificate at the same time? Or do I need to complete SCPM before?
I do not see a limitation to number of courses being done in parallel, so my take is that you can do both at the same time. But you can check with them.

6-Can we get certified at Stanford in different programs?
Yes. They have many programs and you can find details @

  46. hi Sridhar, my name is shilpa I found your blog when i was trying to get information on Standfors advanced project management certificate course.. I do not have a project management background. I am more technical oriented.. So will this affect my application acceptance?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Shilpa,
The prerequisite says, Applicants need a bachelor's degree,a minimum of three to five years of experience managing projects, and may need to complete the Project Management Mastery course online to satisfy admission. Even if you are from technical background, I guess you would have managed project(s) in one form or the other. I would suggest that you document all that in which you think you managed project(s), whether doing scope, cost, schedule, integration, resource, quality, procurement, risk or communication management. Document all the relevant information in the application form and give a try. If in doubt, contact them directly as I have found them to be very forthcoming and quick in responding. Hope this helps. Let me know if there are further questions.
    Good luck

  48. HI Sridhar,
Post is very informative , congratulations !!

I have few questions to you:
    1. You have done PMP & SAPMC which one you think will better to do if you have choice to do only one. Please advice me on the basis of Career & knowledge growth.

    2. I need to select 6 courses to complete SAPMC , which will cost me around $5700 correct me if I am wrong.

3.I m into SAP - IS Retail , do you suggest that i should go for SAPMC , or any Retail Course .
Does Stanford has any other Retail Diploma courses?

    4. If I do my SAPMC first can I retain my PDUs for later and use once i do my PMP?

I know I have asked many questions to you. But after so much of research I got good source of information.
    Thanks :)

  49. Prem,

I have found SCPM more relevant for those who are either involved in PMO or Senior Executives who would like to bring in project/program/portfolio management processes at an Organizational level. In my opinion SCPM does not really make sense for a technical person who is not likely in any of the Project/Program/Portfolio/PMO roles. If you want to get to understand management processes and get yourself in Project Management, then CAPM and PMP would be the way to go. Let me know if you have further questions

Let me see if I can answer your questions.

    1. You have done PMP & SAPMC which one you think will better to do if you have choice to do only one. Please advice me on the basis of Career & knowledge growth.

I would go with PMP first. SCPM compliments PMP and covers advanced topics. PMP helps me get the standardized management processes and since you get PMP after 4 years of Project Management experience, it helps aligning your experience with the knowledge.

    2. I need to select 6 courses to complete SAPMC , which will cost me around $5700 correct me if I am wrong.

    Thats correct

3.I m into SAP - IS Retail , do you suggest that i should go for SAPMC , or any Retail Course .
Does Stanford has any other Retail Diploma courses?

You can find by visiting their website http://scpd.stanford.edu/degreeCredit/degreesCertificates.jsp or mail/call them. They are very responsive

    4. If I do my SAPMC first can I retain my PDUs for later and use once i do my PMP?

I am afraid but no. You need to have PDUs obtained during the three year cycle after obtaining PMP.

Let me know if you have further questions and all the best

I think the review process would be just validating your project/program management experience. If you already are a PMP, then you just get pre approved, if not, then I guess they will just make sure you have the pre-requisite experience. All the best for your endeavor

  56. Hi Sridhar,

Thank you for sharing your information. They are very resourceful! I have three years of working experience as a PM and have recently become PMP. I'm considering about completing SCPM as my next goal. I have two questions to you: 1)What did you achieved by taking SCPM cousres? You think it worth the money and effort? 2)Which of three elective courses did you take/d you recommend?

Thanks for your help in advance!

  57. Sky,
I am glad that you found my post useful. Let me see if I can answer your questions

1)What did you achieved by taking SCPM cousres? You think it worth the money and effort?
Honestly its little difficult to answer your question. Let me try elaborating. I have not changed my job since acquiring my PMP (2008), SCPM (2009) and more recently going for PgMP (2010). Since I have not explored the job market, I cannot comment on what value SCPM would provide while job hunting. But I can certainly say one thing, that Stanford has a reputation and doing Advanced Project Management course would definitely give an edge, at least letting one foot into the door. Now why I did SCPM? I wanted to pursue advanced level in Project Management after PMP and was looking at wisely investing my money. After going through various options, talking to different senior people in the field, I decided to go for SCPM. It was also giving me the option of getting 120 PDUs (though expensive option) for keeping my PMP for next cycle. Also SCPM was one time investment. But more than anything else it was the content of the courses and the opportunity to gain knowledge using which I can possibly provide more value to my Organization. It was the opportunity to attend courses, which are taught by industry gurus. I personally believe that experience is inevitable but learning is not. So it all depends on individuals how they put their knowledge to practice and make the most of it. How would someone know whether certain certification is good of bad? Its people like us who have to showcase what we have gained and put the knowledge in use. I see myself gaining knowledge and growing more in confidence to contribute after doing PMP, SCPM and PgMP. I definitely had my moments when others acknowledged my certifications and the knowledge I gained from doing them.

2)Which of three elective courses did you take/d you recommend?
    I selected following electives
    1. Project Risk Management
    2. Leading Effective Teams
    3. Financial Mastery for Projects

All the best and let me know if you have further questions

  58. Hi Sridhar,

Regarding your question "can I continue my program from India?". Yes, certainly you can do it from India. Course is online and the purpose is to reach all across the globe. I know few who have done this from India.

  64. Hi Sridhar,

I do not have project management experience, but have taken a Project Leadership certificate course. I am considering going a step further and applying for the SCPM. Do you think this would be an effective way to break into the project management field?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  65. Heather,

I appreciate you asking me. IMHO, SCPM should be pursued by someone who is already having project management experience and would like to take their knowledge to the next level at a more strategic level. Course is 'Advanced Project Management' and covers topics, which are more strategic and helps gear up people to take bigger role in a performing organization. I normally advise anyone who is planning to enter into project management to consider PMI's CAPM (http://www.pmi.org/en/Certification/Certified-Associate-in-Project-Management-CAPM.aspx). Its both inexpensive as well as good stepping stone into project management. SCPM would make more sense and be more relevant when one has basic project management experience and then would like to go to the next level like Program Management or Portfolio Management or in PMO or just playing a bigger role.
Let me know if you have further questions.

  66. Sridhar,

Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge of the SAPM. I am currently in the program and planning on taking the risk management course and the finance course. Please share with me more information on these courses regarding content and value/benefit you see as a project manager.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Sharon,

I found Risk Management course to be good and rich in content especially useful in applying to project, program or portfolio levels.
My intent of taking financial course was to get familiar with financial aspect but I was not able to take a lot as take away's. But then this is my personal take. I would certainly recommend risk management if planning to select an optional. Let me know if you have further questions and all the best to you!

  68. Sridhar,

What a wonderful post you have published. Thank you so much for still answering comments, years after the original posting - this is VERY nice of you.

One question that I do not think has been asked, how much self study time do you estimate for every hour of the 20 hours of instruction?

With only a single exam due for course completion and the ability to work the exam throughout the course learnings, I am going to guess that there is a minimum of study outside of the 20 hours course time.

Can you elaborate on how much serious "course focused" time it took you to complete a course?

    Thank you in advance.

    Eric

  69. Thank you Eric for the kind words. I am just paying my dues by trying to give back to the community what I got from others.
Let me see if I can answer your question. BTW thats a great question. Let me see if I can answer that. There were some courses like 'Risk Management' for which there was recommended book 'Decision Making with Insight' by Sam Savage. So while going through the course, I did spend sometime going over the book. Good part is that all recommended books are mailed to you and cost is included within the course fee. So yes, I did spend some side time going through the prescribed books & materials while undergoing the course. Let me know if you have further questions

  70. Hi Sridhar,

Great article. I am working on my PMP certfication right now and looking at doing the online course for SAPM to get my certification. Do you by any chance have the course slides? I would like to look at it if possible before to ascertain the level of education. Please do help if possible

    ReplyDelete
  71. Shyam,

Unfortunately I cannot share the slides as it would violate the copyright. Moreover just going over the slides will not be enough to judge the course content since there are materials and books also. Let me know if you have questions and I can help answering them. If you are planning for PMP, IMHO finish PMP first and then go for SCPM covering advanced topics in project management.

IMHO, SAPM makes sense if you have at least 3 years of PM experience. Only if you have practical experience, you would be able to do justice to the topics covered. Having said that, you might want to send a mail to "scpd-customerservice@stanford.edu" to confirm from them
    All the best

  80. Hi Sridhar,

Your blog is great and your responses are very generous and detailed to a maximum..Impressive!
As a current SCPM, I would like to say that your experience with the program could not be any better, You are a great advocate for the certificate. Unfortunately, I find the contents for the courses to be outdated at times and weak. I cannot say that I learned much throughout all 6 courses, nothing practical and most of it is common sense especially for a so-called "advanced" PM.
The only thing it has going for it is the Stanford stamp.
I do however recommend it to friends and peers when asked, but only to enhance their resume and look good.
Once again, your dedication to your blog is great and impressive.
    All the best

    ReplyDelete
  81. Thank you for your comments. I appreciate it. Its been couple of years since I finished this course. My experience of going through SAPM were beneficial for me at the time especially helping think strategically, risk management, looking beyond project management and understand program and portfolio management.
I realize any course would not be useful if we cannot put theory into practice. Having said that and after going through other credentials, I would say that organizational culture also plays a role in putting what you learn into practice. If its a service oriented organization and delivering services to clients, then there has been a paradigm shift in recent times, when clients are all looking at 'agile' way of getting services delivered. This effects overall managing of various engagements (projects, programs & portfolios) and I would add, possibly new perspective of change control, risk and scope management. As a retrospection, if I do SAPM now in its current content format, I would concur with you.

  82. Dear Sridhar,
First of all, thanks for all the resources and shared experiences.

I am very interested in this program based on a friend’s recommendation and your thoughts. I hope to start it very soon, perhaps even this month. However, after reading your blog something has caught my attention: I have an MBA degree and 6 years of experience as project manager. Also, I have very strong skills and experience in finance topics. However, I have never taken any PM courses or self studied about it before. Actually, I barely know what the contents of the PMBOK are. You mentioned before that this program could be useful to take the Project Management knowledge to the next level. Nevertheless, I find that course descriptions to not imply for mandatory prior knowledge. I am betting that I will be ok only with my working experience and maybe, if necessary, parallel studying unknown (for me) PM concepts. What do think? Would it be essential to have the PMBOK beside me the whole time or maybe postpone the certificate program to after I get through the PMBOK? Thanks a lot

    Luis

    ReplyDelete
  83. Dear Luis,
Thank you for the kind words. Let me see if I can provide answers to your queries.
You have got practical experience in project management, which suffices more than enough for SAPM's pre requisite requirements. You do not necessarily need to go through any formal project management training or PMBOK or PMP certification for that matter. Your 6 years of practical experience following MBA, is more than enough platform for you to get enrolled into SAPM. Having said that, I would encourage you to go through some reference sites to get familiar with PMI standards defined in PMBOK, which would help you while gong through SAPM courses. Note that this is NOT necessary but good knowledge to have.
    You can refer

  84. Thanks for posting this info. I have a PhD in engineering and a couple of years of experience as a researcher in national lab / university participating in large projects. I would like to get some management knowledge. Do you think this program would be appropriate for someone with my profile? Is the PhD worth any years of experience (i.e. as a grad I was in charge of several projects myself)?

    ReplyDelete
  85. From what you stated, it seems that you do have practical experience in project management. I personally think that SAPM's application process is little more relaxed and you should not have any problem in getting through the screening process. If your intent of doing SAPM is to get some management knowledge, then in my opinion, it is relatively on the expensive side. I am assuming that you are looking for project management knowledge. If that's the case, then IMHO, PMI's certifications (CAPM or PMP) should be good starting points. Once done, then SAPM would feel more logical next step.

  88. Hi Sridhar,

What is the duration in days for the campus program. Is there any validity to complete online course (SAPM)?
Campus learing is attractive though expensive. I have done PMP and want to choose between SAPM or other certifications like PRINCE2 / ITIL /SIX SIGMA etc.
"Stanford" name definitely adds more weightage to SAPM.
I have 6 + years of IT experience.
    Please advice..

    ReplyDelete
  89. I am not sure whats the duration of campus program. You can check the website or send email. There is no validity date to complete the course online. You can do at your own pace and convenience. SAPM does provide value because of Stanford but whether it provides value to you would depend how you market yourself. 90. Hi Sridhar.... You are doing a wonderful job with this blog. I am a certified Project manager (PMP) with more than 6 years of Project Management Experience. I have recently moved in the United States ( Seattle,WA) and am looking for a project management job. I want to enhance my job market ( opportunities). Do you think SAPM has the necessary realization in the job market and is considered elite if coupled with PMP since it has the Stanford name attached to it ? My second question is that PMP is very well known but SAPM is not that well known so in your view do employers in US actually value the SAPM program. Thanks in advance and wish my luck in my job hunt !!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Hello,
Honestly, I have not looked through job sites to confirm if there are any specific weightage for SCPM. There is SAPM specific group in LinkedIn. I would suggest you post this query there. I wish you all the very best for your aspirations. Since most of the SDLC projects/products are now being delivered using Agile, having scrum based certifications might make more sense.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hi Sridhar. In one of your posts earlier you mentioned something regarding how to market yourself. Since I just moved in USA , how does one market himself/herself here ? Is it the Job sites or recruiters or is it a better approach to contact organizations directly ?

  96. Nim,
I am glad that you found my blog useful and thank you for asking. From your description it seems that you have experience managing tasks and projects. If you are interested in project management and would like to get into the field and looking to get help with standards and universal acceptance, then PMI's certifications is one way to go. CAPM (http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Certified-Associate-in-Project-Management-CAPM.aspx) is a good start and after which PMP (http://www.pmi.org/en/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx) is more universally recognized. But having said that, if certifications are not what you are interested but would like to get into understanding project management and align it with your work, then you can choose from many blogs, books, white papers and materials out there. PMI's PMBOK is a good to get you familiar with some norms usually used in project management. Let me know if there are further questions and all the very best

My biggest concern is that I was at around 150 words in the experience section. After reviewing my submission, I see they state a minimum of 200 words was required. I hope they don't throw it out because I didn't follow directions to the tee.

My appreciations to you are doing a wonderful job here. I got my PMP one year back. I got few questions to you,
    1. My application for SAPM was approved more than 6 months back, but did not utilise that during that time due to my commitments. Am i still eligible to go ahead with the courses or do I have to apply again.
    2. I have more than 11 years of experience in project controls department in EPC projects. But my education is only Diploma (pursuing graduation by correspondence). I always felt that my job hunt is not giving desired results due to my diploma background. Will SAPM change my possibilities of getting hired ahead of the graduates.
    3. You said the courses will be accessible in the net through study videos. what about the study materials? will it be available by on line or will be couriered to me?

  106. Thiru,
Let me see if I can help answering your questions
#1 You can send a mail/call to confirm with Stanford. I believe you should be fine with your application already confirmed
#2 Its difficult question to answer for sure. Having said that, I always believe in the fact that degree/certification/credential does not have a value on its own, the value is for the person and what matters the most is how the beholder markets it well and makes a good case out of it. Stanford's reputation and its brand quality is renowned and well known. Now how well you market yourself, it depends on you. Your experience and your education, nobody can tell you how to market it as well as you know it already.
#3 Study materials will be available to you to download. You will also receive course books in your postal mail.
Let me know if there are further questions and all the very best

  111. Hi,
I want to apply for this program, I have a BA degree in computer science and Healthcare Administration. I also have a master certificate in IS/IT project management from Villanova, a master certificate in applied project management from villanova as well. I am PMP and ITILV3 Certified and currently taking my LSSGB with Purdue University.

The question is that I am not currently employed by choice but will start work again soon. will I satisfy their questions of current experience and all the other questions in the application that relate to current employer.

    ReplyDelete
  112. kwensi,
I do not believe prerequisite mentions anything about having to be employed currently but does consider relevant project management experience. I would suggest to send a mail to them and get clarified. They are usually very prompt at responding

    ReplyDelete
  113. hi Sridhar,

As for the experience I do have five years experience in Project management. I was referring to questions like

    company/organization

How long you've been in your current position

how many projects or programs do you currently manage

how many employees report directly to you

    ReplyDelete
  114. I would check with Stanford Kwensi. When they refer current, you can mention your most recent one. IMHO, intent of the application is to make sure that you have prior PM experience and does not matter if you are employed or not.

Industry awareness and demand for Agile is on the continuous rise, so it was not surprising when PMI started PMI-ACP. If you have prerequisite Agile PM experience, then I would suggest go for it.

  119. Hi Sridhar,

Your blog looks absolutely marvelous, By luck I got this page while I am on Google.
I have completed by PMP certification a year back & Program management courses. I would like to do SCPM, I may need some guidelines from you.
    1) How long does it take to complete a course, If I study with hyper-interest, i.e. 2 to 3 hours per day ??
    2) I am bit confused on the exam pattern of SCPM, Can i take examination more than once or how it works ??

Thanks for reading post & thanks in advance for you kind reply. If you permit, I would like to shoot out more questions on this (I hope you like that :) )

  120. Karthik,

I am glad that you found the blog useful. If you go through my comments than you can find answers to most of your questions. I am just copy pasting previous answers here

#1 How long it takes for a course to finish?
I was able to finish all 6 courses in 15 days time. It requires some effort since each course approximately takes anywhere between 15 - 20 hours. For me time to finish was a constraint and pushed myself to complete. But the best part is that Videos are accessible for 90 days after you register and accessible even after you pass the exam.

#2 Can I give the exam again?
    Yes you can.

  121. Thanks for you reply.... I appreciate you very much !! After sending you comment I scrolled up & read... I got answers for most of my questions..
How many times Can i re-take if any ???
Once again Thank you very much...

  122. Karthik,

How many times Can i re-take if any ???

You can take as many times as you can till you get 85% or better. They do not however give out the correct or incorrect answers to exam questions. There is NO fees to take the test. Its all included in $950 per course.

    All the best

  123. Sridhar, Thank you so much for all your great work.

I am half of the way to get SCPM. I want to tell everyone here from my experience that don't take it light the exam questions. I mean it is really required to go through all video in details along with reference books to get 85% passing marks. It is not easy to manage full time job and this course together. If anyone have special questions please contact me astrologer@inbox.com

Again, thanks to Sridhar to make this possible.

  125. Hi Sridhar...This is Santosh...I was very happy to read all ur earlier posts and gained a lot of information...I recently got my application approved and looking forward to begin the course shortly. i have some questions in my mind and trying not to make any questions repetitive for which we already have answers above :

    1. Is there a place or if you have the list of reference text books for each course ? I just want to have a look at text books before I actually get into the course .

    2. also will all books me mailed to us for each course when we enroll ? so no need to hunt for and buy the textbooks ?

    3. Any guidelines to keep in mind while selecting electives ? When i spoke to Stanford they say there is no order for courses - we can do the first one 'Converting strategy into action " and then pick anyone ( from required or electives ) ..need help in deciding upon electives - so that I can do more groundwork to see which ones suit best for my profile..

Once again thanks again for all the help Sridhar !!!

  129. Hi Shridhar,
I have several years of practical PM experience and am looking to obtain formal training. I'm not sure the best route to go and have been exploring both SCPM and PMP certificate. Having done both, which would you say would be most beneficial? Would you recommend the PMP first or would the SCPM be good preparation for the PMP? Appreciate your feedback!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Way the trend is, in my opinion present sell-ability of a project manager is now more when you have Agile and certificates associated with Agile as part of your profile. I would personally recommend going for PMI's Agile Certified Practitioner (ACP) certficate. PMP is good and is still the most sought after certificate in project management field. I felt SCPM adds value when you are more playing more strategic role in the Organization like establishing or running PMO or managing large scale strategic programs. Hope this helps and all the very best.

  131. Hi Sridhar,

    Pramod

    ReplyDelete
  132. Pramod,

Its your call. As I have suggested to many in my above comments, it makes sense to do PMP first. SCPM makes sense for someone who is into advanced project management and has a role in the organization, which is strategic.

  133. Hello Sridhar,

Awesome blog. Quick question... once you begin, how long until you must take the exam and finish the course? We will have a newborn and I am not sure how much time will be available. However, right now my company will pay for it, but that program is ending soon. So, ideally I would like to register for 3 courses now (with company money), and then delay finishing them as long as possible. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Regarding the question "once you begin, how long until you must take the exam and finish the course?", answer is it depends on you. After you have been qualified and as you pay the fees for the course, you will have instant access. It requires some effort to clear each course as it approximately takes anywhere between 15 - 20 hours to go through them. For me time to finish was a constraint and pushed myself to complete and finished the entire course in 15 days. But the best part is that Videos are accessible for 90 days after you register and accessible even after you pass the exam. So in case you want to refer back to them, you can do that.

  136. Hi Sridhar,

Thanks so much for doing this blog and for continuously giving back. I have a background in Business/Commerce I've managed a few projects and conferences. I heard only people with technical background ( e.g. IT, engineer) would go for these type of certifications. Would someone without science/technical background can benefit from the SAPM? As well, i have not done PMP, do you think it would be a complete waste if I do the SAPM first? And, may I ask how did you study for PMP exam and how long did it take you to complete the PMP?
    Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Thi,

I have answered most of your questions in my previous comments. Let me quickly reiterate. IMHO, its better to do PMP before SCPM as SCPM is covering more advanced topics.
Project Management is not tied to being technical. You can excel well in PM field coming from non technical background too.
Certifications help get our resumes filtered in. PMP certification has become more of a defacto criteria while considering candidature for PM role.
Hope this helps. Let me know if there are further questions

  146. Hello my friend,

I got accepted into the program for Advanced Project Management Certificate. I was wondering though, I am going to opt for an MBA in the Fall of 2013. Do you think its worth it to get a certificate or two along the way?

I am planning on completing the Advanced Project Management Certificate program by the end of the year or sooner.

I just graduated from SJSU with a B.S, in Business Administration & Management degree. I was wondering if an MBA or a few certifications would be the best route to take or all of them?

    Thanks,
    - Oscar

    ReplyDelete
  147. Hello Oscar,
Thank you for stopping by and asking. There are debates on value of MBA when compared with value of professional certifications and IMHO MBA is a professional degree and should not be compared with professional certifications. MBA has a value and a place of its own while professional certifications especially in the field of project management including PMP, SCPM, CSM, ACP are becoming de-facto entry points of getting your resume through the door, especially in a competitive market like today.
MBA is definitely going to help you in your career in the long run and as you gain experience, certificates would help. Most of the certificates I have mentioned cannot be obtained or should not be obtained without pre requisite experience otherwise they defeat the very purpose of their value. Knowledge you would gain in your MBA would help you prepare for the real world, help you be prepared to face real time situations, how to work smart in tough situations and lot more. Having MBA would differentiate you from others and as you make in the world of management, based on your interest, you can work your way through certifications. But do not try getting certifications before you gain experience.
All the very best Oscar and we are sure you will do very well

    - Do they provide some complete notes to follow each course? In pdf, that can be downloaded?
    - Can we download the videos (I say that because I am currently working in West Arica and internet do not work always properly)?
    - How many hours do you think must be dedicated to each course ?

  154. Thank you for stopping by and asking for help. Good luck with rest of your course. My advise has always been that as an individual its your responsibility of how well you market yourself to make advances in your carrer and have success stories written. You are the best judge of your current job profile and potential opportunities so choose your course contents well. For instance, if you want to take your profile to be more strategic in the current or next organization then plan your courses accordingly. Stanford is renowned universally so a certification from it definitely adds value to your profile but understand that its your responsibility to market it well. SDLC is now more preferred to be Agile centric but it also needs a long term vision or Organizational strategy defined in clear terms to be successfully executed. As you advance in your career, its you who will fill the shoe of being in that strategic role. Let me know if this helps or you have further questions. Once again all the very best for your endeavors.

    Great Post !

I read you post and can say that this is one of the best if not best.

My application for SCPM has been approved but I am still confused whether MBA in project management would be better choice or SCPM from Standford.

I would really appreciate if you could pen your opinion on this.

    Thanks,
    Kishore

    ReplyDelete
  162. Thanks for the compliment Kishore. Answer to your question depends on the university you are getting MBA from. My personal opinion is that MBA being a degree is better than a certificate course but having said that, if MBA is from a not so well known University than I would weigh more. Stanford is renowned universally and it's certificate course carries its own weight. Let me know if this helps

  168. Hi Sridhar,
Thanks for the blog, It's very informative.
I think this questions has been answered above, but wanted to know/learn more about various aspects of SCPM.
I have been in dev/architect position for the last 13 years and have undertaken many projects through various life-cycles. have learnt a lot along the way.
I am currently looking for a formal Project Manager Role and wanted to know is PMI really needed for the next level. will SCPM substitute if a job requirement says "PMP will be plus".
I have cleared the application for Stanford last year, but couldn't pursue it , as I was still measuring whether PMP or SCPM?

If PMP , then what do you suggest is the best way to go for the course, Any inputs?
    Thanks

  169. Rahul,
Thanks for stopping by. We have covered your questions in previous comments but I can nevertheless share my thoughts again. PMP certification has now become the de facto for foraying into the role of project management. PMI is widely known organization for defining project management standards and doing a good job in revising them with changing times (read Agile). IMHO one must go with PMP first before going for SCPM as SCPM is more applicable in covering advanced project management topics (read strategy). When you prepare for PMP, you will end up getting yourself familiar with standards and you can easily map them with your own professional experience in managing projects. I cleared my PMP in 2008 and it was mostly self study as I was mapping PMBOK with my own experience and that helped. Having said that, I did take lot of free practice tests and PMPCampus. You can read more @ http://sridharpeddisetty.blogspot.com/2008/05/lessons-learned-journey-to-project_03.html
I understand that now you have more options available so go to sites like PMHub forums to check what currently people are recommending. All the very best and let me know if there are further questions.

Is that correct, I already have the 4th edition, How much of a change we are looking at?
Also I am trying to connect to PMCampus, to find out if their courses are tailored towards the change in exam and practices.

You should be able to find answers to your queries in my past comments. Anyways just to summarize for your sake, I would recommend that you first try getting hands on experience in managing project(s), if thats what interests you. Once you have the pre-requisite experience, then go for PMP as the standard is changing based on current Agile needs. After that you can decide to go for more strategic credentials like SCPM or PgMP. All the best and do let me know if you have further questions

  176. Hi Sridhar, first off: great blog!

I find myself in the same position as you. As a PMP I am wondering what's next.

I can't find it anymore, but I believe at some point you compared SCPM and PMP. One of the things you mentioned was that even though the requirements for the SCPM list a bachelor's degree, they would evaluate an application on a case by case basis, if a candidate doesn't have one.
Can you please let me know/point me in the right direction as to what that statement is based on?

Also, did you find the SCPM experience worthwhile?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Cheers, Martin

    1. Martin,
Apologize for getting back to you late on this. Regarding your queries, I would speak to the representative directly as they are very receptive and efficient in answering the queries. When I did SCPM in 2009, I remember talking with someone who mentioned the same. Since I had PMP, it was sufficient enough to qualify and none of my other credentials were verified.
Regarding whether SCPM was worthwhile, it depends upon how you market yourself after attaining it. Course was definitely good covering advanced PM topics that exposes one to think more strategically and play a bigger role in an Org. Having said that, one still needs to sell themselves on how being SCPM makes them better. I have not changed my Org. since I obtained SCPM so cannot comment on whether its going to help get better job but within the Org., it certainly helped me to get recognized by my execs and peers.

I have a similar questions to the one asked by a person before:
    1. Is there a place or if you have the list of reference text books for each course ? I just want to have a look at text books before I actually get into the course.

Like person above I like to get my mind wrapped around the course material before starting the course. This gives me an idea of the length, width and the depth of the course and preps be for the effort and time commitments that follow.

Do you have, or is there a public list of required reference books by course?

I've read "Executing the Strategy" which is a great book and am ready to start the first course.

Please note: I'm not asking for copyrighted material. That would be unethical and immoral.

    Thank You,
    C

  182. Hi Sridhar,
This blog is really informative. Thank you for posting and helping people.

I have a question. I have an MBA degree and 6 years of IT experience on the whole. In the last 2 years most of the time was spent in managing projects. Am ready now to move forward and sure that I would meet the eligibility critiera for both PMP and SCPM. Can you please suggest me whether I should go for PMP exam or SCPM exam to boost my job opportunities in US. Am planning to complete either one of these certification courses and switch job before end of this year.

  186. Hi Sridhar,

Is there a recommended / reading list for the "Financial Mastery for Projects" course.

What are your thoughts and your impression of the course?
Did it give you a deeper insight into how upper/senior management looks at portfolios/programs/projects?
Did it help in your day to day job? Did you find it useful?
    How was the course presented?

I want to hear your candid thoughts and opinions.

I took the first course - Converting Strategy into Action, and found it very well presented and enjoyed it a lot.

    1. I apologize for getting back to you little late on this. Its been more than 4 years so my memory is not the best but i do remember liking "Financial Mastery for Projects" course. There were some good reference books that were mailed and I personally enjoyed the presentation of the course. Some of the financial theories and calculation logics were well covered and one can map it with the real time usage. Hope this helps

  189. I had a question : typically in an org, who owns portfolio management ?

    1. It depends on the Organization, its size and motivation in investment. Normally Portfolio Management is part of Project Management Office (PMO) and in some cases there are Portfolio Managers to manage portfolio of projects and/or programs.
